Abstract
The article presents a translation of the Chapter from the travel notes of the French traveler Olympe Audouard (Olympe Audouard (1832-1890)) " Journey to the country of the boyars. Essays on Russia of our days (Voyage au pays des boyards. Étude sur la Russie actuelle)", who was in Russia twice: in 1864 and in 1876. The work of Audouard, published in Paris in 1881, was intended for a wide range of readers-contemporaries of the traveler, and in an entertaining form introduced the French to their new ally - since 1882, negotiations were conducted on a military alliance between Russia and France, united in 1894 to oppose the Entente. The present Chapter describes the police, prisons and fortresses of Russia. The translation was made by L. E. Ilyina.
