Аннотация
Предметом исследования статьи является сложившаяся в Нидерландской Гвиане система хозяйствования, основанная на принудительном рабском труде. Степень жестокости данной системы за последние столетия оказалась мифологизирована как современниками событий, так и позднейшими исследователями. Сегодня в Нидерландах эпоха колониального рабства была осуждена на высшем уровне, но одновременно признана частью национальной истории, что во многом стало заслугой влиятельной карибской общины. Однако отношение к данной теме в обществе остается крайне поляризованным, становясь предметом манипуляции со стороны популистских и националистических сил.
Работа основана на широком круге зарубежных источников и исследований; методологической базой выступают историко-генетический и сравнительный методы. Научная новизна статьи вызвана слабой изученностью данной темы в отечественной науке. Сравнительное изучение положения рабов в Западном полушарии показало, что жесткость была свойственна не только голландскому колониальному этосу. Высокая смертность и тяготы жизни рабов в Нидерладнской Гвиане и Карибском регионе обусловлены спецификой сахарных плантаций, а не более высокой степенью расизма по сравнению с Ибероамерикой. Автор обращает внимание на постепенную прогрессивную эволюцию всех режимов рабовладения на Американском континенте.
